Spindeljakten poster competition update!

Students in grade 8 and 9 (STEAM Club students) made posters on the topic ‘Spiderhunt’ or ‘Spindeljakten’(discussed in classes). A jury in school decided the best poster which has been nominated to participate in the final rounds of the competition at the Nobel Museum. The winning poster will be displayed in the final Spindeljakten Research project conference held at the Nobel Museum on 7th December at the 'avslutning' conference. 

The two students who will be representing IES Kista at the Nobel Museum are Marie-Gabrielle Popa & Carl-Johan Agebratt.

Spindeljakten project - April 2018

IES Kista, this year is a proud member of the Forskarhjälpen project conducted by the Nobel Museum. It is important to connect science to real life scenario.Through Forskarhjälpen, the Nobel Museum, want to give students an opportunity to research themselves, in a real research project. Students gain a deeper understanding of what a research project can mean, and the researchers at the same time get help with their research. Students contribute observations and collection of materials and data to an established research team working on a specific research project. It is funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research.

In order to be able to do a project that the students understand and can participate in, the teachers must research, simplify and be very good at explaining what is going to be done as a researcher. It is very useful, and with this internship-based combination of research and pedagogy, we give the students a strong experience and increased understanding of what research can be.

This year, students are working on the Spindel jakten project. Students went out to collect spiders around water bodies in Kista to check the level of chemicals(drugs) found in them. This will help the researchers to estimate the amount of chemicals found in the water bodies around us. This project is handled by two well-known researchers at Umeå University, Mr. Jerker Fick, and Mr. Tomas Brodin.

Students were really excited to take part in the project. They enjoyed a day trip around Kista to collect spiders and water samples. We will start the second part of the project in September next term and will also take part in a poster competition organized by the Nobel Museum with a number of other schools across Sweden.  Best of luck to the Kista team!!



Another successful open mic night!

On May 30th, IES Kista hosted another successful open mic event or “Coffee House”. We had many different musical acts, including an original song by Otavio Rodrigues Capato, performances by Eliana and Emily Bartolome Parada and Gabrielle Popa. Ms Hindrichs’ percussion ensemble. A play written and performed by members of Ms Evans Drama Club and multiple K-pop dances added some energy and variety to the show. That being said, it wouldn’t be a “Coffee House” without coffee and fika! Thank you to the PTA for providing and selling treats for the audience.

Thanks again to the teachers, PTA and all the performers for all your hard work.

IES Kista Aesthetics Gala

On the 13th of December IES Kista opened it’s doors to students as well as parents and guardians of students to a vernissage come concert. Above is Ms Fagerlund greeting guests.

The students here at IES Kista produce some amazing pieces of art within the aesthetic education, ranging from incredible high quality pieces of woodwork to abstract and beautiful art created in arts, and the Aesthetics Gala offered an opportunity for the students to display their creativity and skills for a broader audience.

The Aesthetics Gala saw around a hundred visitors and they enjoyed a fantastic Lucia Concert performed by the Student Band here at IES Kista, directed under the watchful eye of Mr. Brown, one of our music teachers.

The Gala was much appreciated by students as well as parents of guardians and we at IES Kista take real pride in the work produced by our students and look forward to hosting the next gala during the spring term om -18.

IES Kista producing the technology of the future


Here at IES Kista we have so many different and inspiring projects going on. One of them took place in one of the well equipped and modern Science labs, where the students were assigned do design a project demonstrating how pressure works. There were a lot of well thought out projects, however, one stood out. A robotic arm was designed and built. The assignment was laid out over the period of a week, where one and a half lesson was designated for designing and thinking a project out.

Using the google classroom technique and our disposal, one of the students designed and built a fully functional robotic arm. Please see the pictures below. The way the robotics arm works is with the help of three, double fitted pistons, moving the robotic arm in three directions. The robotic arm is controlled via a control pad where the different pistons is filled with color coded fluids, each fluid controlling a different movement.

In addition to this, three students from IES Kista is participating in the EDU-ARCTIC technology competition, where students are performing research on the difficulties facing the polar environment around the world. The research ideas submitted by the IES Kista students span over the spectrum of problems facing the arctic, among others the hunting of polar animals and the consequences of polar tourism.
