All Smiles: Ms. Barbara Bergström with some of our Year 8 prefects at our Opening Ceremony

On Friday 28th August IES Kista had its official Opening Ceremony. This was the long-awaited moment when our school was inaugurated into the Internationella Engelska Skolan family.

Special guests included Ms. Barbara Bergström, the founder of the Internationella Engelska Skolan company, as well as the organisation's current CEO Mr. Ralph Riber. Furthermore local community figures, including politicians alongside local police and fire chiefs were present.

The Opening Ceremony took place in the IES Kista Student Lounge. Here all were welcomed by Principal Mr. McGowan, who spoke alongside Ms. Barbara Bergström to the assembled guests. The school choir from IES Eskistuna performed the official IES song In The Morning Of Life at the ceremony.

Following the speeches, Ms. Barbara Bergström planted a ceremonial apple tree in the science garden. The apple features on the IES logo as a symbol of knowledge, and our apple tree at Kista will hopefully bear fruit in the years to come, just like our students.

Later on in the day the performers from Eskilstuna produced a fantastic set of entertaining songs for our students to celebrate the start of our new school.

IES Kista joins Umeå and Hässelholm in opening this summer, bringing Internationella Engelska Skolan to a total of 28 grundskolor across Sweden.

Many thanks to Mr. Jonathan Howell from Internationella Engelska Skolan for the photography on the big day.

On Wednesday 26th August, all the parents of our students at IES Kista were invited to the school. The evening session included a speech from our Principal Mr. McGowan, a tour of the school building by our Year 8 prefects as well as the opportunity to meet their childrens' mentors for the next school year.

In Mr. McGowan's speech, he highlighted many of the fantastic new developments of our newly developed school building.

Establishing a strong connection between the parents and mentors is vital at IES Kista. Throughout the year, mentors will be greeting their students as they start and leave school each day, and ensuring their mobile phones are locked away safely in their home classroom. Furthermore mentors monitor the achievement and well being of each of their students, and keep parents updated through monthly phone calls.

On Wednesday 19th August Internationella Engelska Skolan i Kista opened its doors officially for students for the first time.

Over 550 students from Years 4 to 8 were enrolled for the first day of education in the new building. During the first day students were able to meet their new mentor class, take a tour around the entire school building and receive their equipment for the new school year.

Furthermore, in a special video from the school management team, each student learned about our school house system, and discovered which of the four houses they will be a part of this year. Students also had lunch in our new dining room where they sat in their house groups.

Students begin their full timetable straight away on Thursday 20th August.

The launch of the school was attended by the founder of Internationella Engelska Skolan, Ms. Barbara Bergström and the CEO of Internationella Engelska Skolan Mr. Ralph Riber. Ms. Bergström was said to be 'very impressed' with the opening day at the biggest start-up school in the organisation.

On Monday 10th August our staff at IES Kista were given access to the brand new school building on Isafjördsgatan 39.

The building work, which has been taking place for many months to a cost of over 50 million kronor, is now complete in all classrooms and social areas, such as the library and the restaurant.

Staff are now busy sorting their workspaces, decorating their classrooms and unpacking all of the equipment ordered over the summer. Students will be welcome for the first day on Wednesday 19th August, with different start times during the morning, with lessons starting that afternoon.

Below are some pictures from inside the school building.
